Bradford White 2 flashes
Bradford White 2 flashes: weak pilot signal
Short answer
Two distinct flashes followed by a three-second pause means the gas valve has detected a weak pilot signal, usually a thermopile that is wearing out. The heater still works, but it is an early warning worth acting on.
Bradford White's ICON gas valve runs on power made by the pilot flame through a thermopile. Two flashes with a pause is the valve warning you that the signal from the pilot is getting weak.
Bradford White changed its status codes in January 2019. Units with a serial number date code of TA or later use the newer ICON 2.0 table; older units use ICON 1.0. The first two letters of the serial number on the rating label tell you which one you have.
Do not confuse it with normal heating
On older ICON 1.0 controls, a quick two-flash strobe is normal and means the burner is heating. The warning is two slower, distinct flashes followed by a three-second pause. If the water is heating normally and the flashes are quick, it is probably the normal strobe.
What causes a weak pilot signal
- A thermopile near the end of its life
- A dirty or weak pilot flame
- A loose connection between the pilot assembly and the valve
What to do
Schedule service while it is still only a warning. A technician will measure the thermopile's output with a meter and replace the pilot assembly if it is low. Left alone, a weak thermopile usually ends with a pilot that will not stay lit.
Common questions
Is 2 flashes on a Bradford White an emergency?
No, it is a warning. The heater is still working, but the thermopile is likely wearing out, so plan service soon.
