How to check a Florida plumber's license
Florida plumbing contractors are licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). A license starting with CFC is a Certified Plumbing Contractor license, valid anywhere in the state. A license starting with RF is a Registered Plumbing Contractor license, valid only in the local areas where the contractor is registered. You can look up any license on the DBPR's Verify a License page and confirm it is current and active.
Hiring a licensed contractor also matters if something goes wrong: Florida's Construction Industries Recovery Fund can compensate homeowners for certain losses caused by licensed contractors, but not by unlicensed ones.
Before you hire
- Make sure the license number on the website or truck belongs to that company in DBPR records. Some websites show a number that belongs to another business.
- Confirm the status is current and active.
- Ask for proof of insurance and a written estimate.
