How to check a Florida plumber's license

Florida plumbing contractors are licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). A license starting with CFC is a Certified Plumbing Contractor license, valid anywhere in the state; RF is a Registered Plumbing Contractor license, valid only where the contractor is registered. Look up the number on the DBPR's Verify a License page, confirm it is current and active, and check that the name on the record matches the company you are hiring.

How we narrowed the list

We matched each company's license number to DBPR records. We left out companies whose license was inactive, whose advertised number belonged to a different business, and businesses whose old website now points somewhere else.

Plumbing in Central Florida homes

Many Central Florida homes built from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s were plumbed with polybutylene pipe, a gray plastic line that can fail without warning. Some insurers will not cover homes that still have it, which is why repiping is common here; see our guide to whole house repiping cost. Most homes sit on concrete slabs, so learn the signs of a slab leak as well.

Replacing a water heater usually needs a permit in Florida, and a licensed plumber normally pulls it. Ask whether the permit and inspection are in the quote.

Common questions

How do I know if my Orlando home has polybutylene pipe?

Polybutylene is usually gray, sometimes blue or black, and stamped PB2110. Look where pipes enter the water heater or come out of walls under sinks, or ask a plumber to check.
