Water heater repair cost (2026)
Short answer
Most water heater repairs cost about $230 to $1,000 in 2026, and Angi puts the national average at $615. Small fixes such as a thermocouple, thermostat or heating element usually run $100 to $350, a gas control valve about $150 to $550, and a leaking tank usually means replacement rather than repair.
In this guide
A water heater that stops making hot water does not automatically need replacing. Many failures come down to one inexpensive part. The key is knowing which part, what it should cost, and when the repair is no longer worth it.
Figures are 2026 national estimates compiled from published cost guides such as Angi, HomeGuide and HomeAdvisor. Prices in high-cost metro areas often run above these ranges, and rural areas can run below them.
Typical repair costs by part
| Repair | Typical 2026 cost | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Service call or trip fee | About $50 to $200 | All |
| Pilot relight and inspection | About $50 to $150 | Gas |
| Thermocouple | About $100 to $325 | Gas |
| Igniter (electronic ignition) | About $75 to $350 | Gas |
| Gas control valve | About $150 to $550 | Gas |
| Thermostat | About $100 to $350 | Gas and electric |
| Heating element | About $150 to $300 | Electric |
| Temperature and pressure relief valve | About $50 to $300 | All |
| Flue pipe | About $100 to $350 | Gas |
| Tank flush | About $75 to $250 | All tanks |
Angi reports a 2026 national average of $615 across all water heater repairs, with most homeowners paying between about $230 and $1,000. Minor fixes can start near $90, and the largest repairs approach $1,800.
Gas water heater repairs
Gas tanks have more parts that can fail. The common ones are:
- Thermocouple. If the pilot lights but will not stay lit, a worn thermocouple is the usual cause. It is one of the most common and least expensive gas repairs.
- Igniter. Newer tanks use electronic ignition instead of a standing pilot. A failed igniter keeps the burner from lighting.
- Gas control valve. The valve holds the thermostat and pilot controls. It is the priciest common gas repair, and a technician should rule out the thermocouple and igniter first.
- Venting. A damaged or disconnected flue pipe is a safety issue because exhaust can enter the home. It should be repaired right away.
Electric water heater repairs
Electric tanks are simpler. Most repairs involve one of the two heating elements or thermostats, and often both are checked on the same visit. If only the upper element works, you get a small amount of hot water that runs out fast. If the upper one fails, you usually get none. A tripped high-limit reset button can also be the whole problem, although a reset that trips again points to a failing thermostat or element.
What raises the bill
- Emergency timing. Nights, weekends and holidays can cost 1.5 to 3 times the normal rate.
- Access. A heater in a tight closet, attic or crawl space takes longer to work on.
- Brand-specific parts. Gas valves are not always interchangeable between brands.
- Code upgrades. A plumber may point out a missing expansion tank, drain pan or seismic strapping that local code requires.
Repair or replace?
A repair usually makes sense when the tank is younger than about eight to ten years and the problem is a part. A common rule of thumb is to replace instead of repair when the repair would cost more than about half the price of a new heater, or when the heater is past its expected life.
If water is leaking from the tank itself, not a valve or fitting, the tank has corroded through. That is not repairable, and the heater needs to be replaced.
Compare any large repair quote against the water heater replacement cost for a similar unit before you decide. If your heater is a tankless model, see our tankless water heater repair cost guide instead, since the parts and prices differ.
Warranty and home warranty coverage
Tank warranties typically cover the tank for six to twelve years and parts for a shorter period, and labor is often covered only for the first year, if at all. Find the serial number to check the age before paying for parts. If you have a home warranty, the plan may cover the repair for a flat service fee.
How to compare quotes
- Get at least two written quotes that describe the same work, part by part.
- Ask whether the price includes the service call, parts, labor, disposal and any permit.
- Ask what warranty covers the parts and the labor, and for how long.
- Ask the technician to show you the failed part or the reading that proves it failed.
- Be cautious with a quote far below the others; ask what it leaves out.
Common questions
Is it worth repairing a 10 year old water heater?
Often it is not, unless the repair is small and inexpensive, such as a thermocouple. At that age a leak or a second failure is likely soon.
How much does it cost to replace a thermocouple?
A professional thermocouple replacement typically costs about $100 to $325. The part itself is inexpensive.
Can I repair a water heater myself?
Simple jobs such as relighting a pilot or pressing a reset button are common DIY tasks. Gas valve work, electrical testing and venting repairs are best left to a licensed plumber.
