What to do before the plumber arrives

Turn off the main water shutoff to stop the damage. For a leaking water heater, close the cold water valve on top of the tank and turn off the gas or the breaker. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

Questions to ask on the phone

  • Is there an after-hours or weekend fee, and how much is it?
  • When can a licensed plumber actually arrive?
  • What is the Responsible Master Plumber license number?

After-hours rates are higher almost everywhere. Our guide to emergency plumber cost explains typical surcharges.

Common questions

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water you cannot stop, a sewer backup into the house, no water at all, or a gas smell near a water heater. A slow drain or a dripping faucet can usually wait for regular hours.

Is it cheaper to wait until morning?

Usually, yes. If you can shut off the water and stop the damage, a regular-hours visit often costs less than an after-hours call.
