Check the license before you book

Ask for the company's Responsible Master Plumber license number. In Texas it starts with M, and you can confirm it on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners public license search. The board also keeps a certificate of insurance on file for every Responsible Master Plumber, so a current listing there is a good first check.

Permits for plumbing work in Austin

The City of Austin issues stand-alone trade permits for plumbing repairs and for plumbing change-outs, and it has a separate path for emergency repairs to damaged water lines. Replacing a water heater is generally permitted work. A licensed plumber usually pulls the permit and books the inspection, so ask whether the permit fee is included in the quote.

If you live outside city limits, in places like Round Rock, Cedar Park or Pflugerville, your own city handles permits. Your plumber should know which office applies.

Plumbing problems Austin homeowners call about

The February 2021 freeze left many Central Texas homes with split pipes, and it showed how few houses are built for a hard freeze. Before a cold snap, the steps to prevent frozen pipes are quick and cost little compared with burst pipe repair cost.

Many Austin homes sit on concrete slab foundations, where a leaking pipe can stay hidden for months. Learn the signs of a slab leak, and ask whether a company does its own leak detection before you book.

What plumbing costs

Prices vary with the job and the time of day. Our national guides explain typical ranges for plumber cost per hour, water heater repair cost and drain cleaning cost. Get the price in writing before work starts.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Austin?

Generally yes. The City of Austin treats water heater replacement as permitted plumbing work, and a licensed plumber normally pulls the permit and schedules the inspection.

Why are some of these companies outside Austin?

Several established plumbing companies keep their office in Cedar Park, Pflugerville or another nearby town and serve Austin from there. Each listing shows where the office is and the area it covers.
