Before you call a Houston plumber

Ask for the company's Responsible Master Plumber license number. In Texas it starts with M, and you can look it up on the state board's public license search in a minute. Ask whether the price is a flat rate or hourly, and whether a trip or diagnostic fee applies. If you want to know what is normal, see our guides to plumber cost per hour and emergency plumber cost.

Plumbing permits in Houston

Inside Houston city limits, a plumbing permit is required to replace or install a water heater, and an inspection follows. The permit must be pulled by a master plumber who is registered with the City of Houston, so a licensed company usually handles it and includes the fee in its quote. Some small jobs, such as replacing a toilet, a kitchen or bathroom faucet or a garbage disposal, are exempt from the fixture permit.

Suburbs such as Katy, Sugar Land or Pearland have their own permit offices and rules. Ask your plumber which one applies to your address.

Common plumbing problems in Houston homes

Many Houston-area homes are built on concrete slabs, so a leaking pipe can sit under the floor where you cannot see it. A water bill that jumps for no reason or a warm spot on the floor are two of the signs of a slab leak. Finding one takes leak detection equipment, so ask whether the company does its own detection before you book.

Houston freezes are rare but serious, as the February 2021 winter storm showed. If a hard freeze is forecast, the steps to prevent frozen pipes are simple and cheap compared with burst pipe repair cost.

What to expect to pay

Prices depend on the job, the time of day and the company. Our national guides explain the ranges and what drives them: drain cleaning cost, water heater repair cost and slab leak repair cost. Always get the price in writing before work starts.

Common questions

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Houston?

Yes. Inside city limits, the City of Houston requires a plumbing permit and an inspection for water heater replacement. A master plumber registered with the city must pull the permit.

How do I check a Houston plumber's license?

Ask for the Responsible Master Plumber license number, which starts with M, and look it up on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners public license search.

Which Houston plumbers offer 24/7 service?

Companies marked "24/7 emergency service" on this page say on their own websites that they answer or dispatch around the clock. Call to confirm availability and after-hours pricing.
