Check the license before you book
Ask for the company's Responsible Master Plumber license number. In Texas it starts with M, and you can confirm it on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners public license search. The board also keeps a certificate of insurance on file for every Responsible Master Plumber, so a current listing there is a good first check.
Permits in Dallas and the suburbs
Each city in the Metroplex runs its own permit office, so the rules depend on where you live, not where the plumber is based. Most treat water heater replacement as permitted work. Grapevine, for example, states that replacing a water heater without a permit is illegal even for a homeowner. Ask your plumber to confirm the permit and inspection are included in the quote.
Plumbing problems Dallas homeowners call about
Many North Texas homes are built on concrete slabs, so supply and drain leaks can hide under the floor. Know the signs of a slab leak and ask whether a company does its own leak detection. Older neighborhoods with original cast iron or clay sewer lines often see root intrusion and backups. A sewer camera inspection shows the cause before you pay for a repair.
The February 2021 freeze burst pipes across the region. If a hard freeze is forecast, take a few minutes to prevent frozen pipes.
