Water heater gas valve replacement cost (2026)
Short answer
Replacing a water heater gas control valve typically costs about $150 to $550 in 2026, according to HomeGuide, and HomeAdvisor puts the average around $350. The valve also contains the thermostat and pilot controls on most gas tanks, so it is one of the more expensive tank repairs. On an older heater, compare it with the price of a new one.
In this guide
The gas control valve is the box on the front of a gas tank water heater with the temperature knob. It controls gas to the pilot and burner and, on most tanks, contains the thermostat too.
Figures are 2026 national estimates compiled from published cost guides such as HomeGuide, Angi and HomeAdvisor. Labor rates in high-cost metro areas often run above these ranges.
Typical costs
| Item | Typical 2026 cost |
|---|---|
| Gas control valve, installed (HomeGuide) | About $150 to $550 |
| Average replacement (HomeAdvisor) | About $350 |
| Thermocouple, for comparison | About $100 to $325 |
Signs the gas valve may be failing
- Water too hot or not hot enough despite the setting
- A pilot that will not stay lit even with a good thermocouple
- Status light codes pointing to the valve, such as seven flashes on some Bradford White ICON controls or an overheat code on A. O. Smith controls
- A gas smell at the valve, which is an emergency
If you smell gas, do not light anything or touch electrical switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
What affects the price
- Valve type. Basic mechanical valves cost less than electronic, thermopile-powered valves.
- Brand match. Valves are often brand and model specific.
- Draining. Many valves thread into the tank and require draining it first. Some newer designs can be swapped without draining.
- Leak testing and relighting, which are part of every proper gas valve job.
Repair or replace the heater?
On a tank under about eight years old, a new valve usually makes sense. On an older tank, the valve can cost a large share of a new heater, and the tank itself is closer to failing. Check the age and warranty first; valves are sometimes covered longer than labor.
This is not a DIY job
Gas valve replacement involves gas connections and leak testing. Manufacturers warn against tampering with gas controls, and a mistake can cause a leak or fire. Hire a qualified technician.
Not sure how old your heater is? The serial number tells you. See our guides for Rheem, A. O. Smith and Bradford White, and use our repair or replace water heater calculator to see how age changes the math.
What happens during the replacement
- The technician turns off the gas supply and the cold water, and drains the tank if the valve threads into it.
- Disconnects the gas line, the pilot tube, the thermocouple or thermopile wiring and the burner supply.
- Removes the old valve and installs the new one with approved thread sealant.
- Refills the tank, restores gas, checks every joint for leaks with a detector or soap solution, and relights the pilot.
- Confirms the water reaches the set temperature and the status light shows normal operation.
Replacement parts must match
Valves differ by brand, gas type (natural gas or propane), and control type. Installing a natural gas valve on a propane heater, or the reverse, is dangerous. The heater's model number and rating plate decide the right part, and many manufacturers sell valves only through service channels.
Signs it is time for a new heater instead
- The tank is past about ten years old
- There is rust at the fittings or rusty hot water
- Other parts have been replaced recently
Our repair or replace water heater calculator puts numbers on the choice.
Getting a fair price
- Ask for a flat price that includes the part, labor and the service call.
- Ask the technician to show you the reading or the failed part that proves the diagnosis.
- Check the heater's age from the serial number. A repair on a heater past about ten years deserves a second look.
- Check the warranty first. Parts are often covered longer than labor.
Common questions
Can a gas valve be repaired instead of replaced?
Generally no. Faulty gas control valves are replaced as a unit.
Is a gas valve covered by warranty?
Parts warranties often last longer than labor coverage. Check your heater's warranty with the serial number before paying for the part.
