Navien E003
Navien E003: ignition failure, causes and fixes
Short answer
E003 means the Navien tried to light the burner and did not detect a flame. The most common causes are a closed or low gas supply, air in the gas line, a blocked intake or exhaust vent, a blocked condensate drain, or a dirty flame rod or faulty igniter.
Navien tankless water heaters and combi boilers show E003 when the ignition sequence finishes without a flame being detected. The unit stops trying and shuts off the gas as a safety measure.
Most E003 codes trace back to the gas supply or the venting, so start there before assuming a part has failed.
If you smell gas, do not touch the unit or any switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
What to check first
- Confirm that other gas appliances in the house are working.
- Check that the manual gas valve on the supply line to the Navien is fully open. The handle should run in line with the pipe.
- On propane, check the tank level. Low tanks and freshly refilled tanks often cause ignition codes.
- Go outside and look at the intake and exhaust vent terminals. Clear any snow, ice, leaves, insect nests or debris.
- Press the power button to turn the unit off, wait about a minute, turn it back on and open a hot water tap.
Common causes of Navien E003
Gas supply is off or too low
Tankless heaters need a large volume of gas the moment they fire. A partly closed valve, an undersized gas line or low pressure from the meter can all keep the burner from lighting. If E003 appears mostly when the furnace or dryer is also running, the gas line may be too small, and a plumber can measure the pressure while everything runs.
Air in the gas line
After a new installation, a meter swap or a propane tank that ran empty, air in the line can prevent ignition. Several reset attempts often purge it.
Blocked vent or intake
Navien units need a clear path for combustion air and exhaust. Blockages outside, or a disconnected or damaged vent pipe inside, can stop ignition.
Blocked condensate drain
Condensing units like Navien produce acidic condensate that drains through a trap and a small line. If the trap or drain line clogs or freezes, water can back up and interfere with combustion. Check that the drain line is not kinked, frozen or blocked.
Flame rod or igniter problem
A dirty or damaged flame rod can fail to sense a flame that did light, and a worn igniter can fail to light it at all. Both are inside the sealed combustion area and should be serviced by a qualified technician.
Wrong gas type setting
Navien units are configured for natural gas or propane. A unit running on the wrong gas type will have ignition problems. This is most common after a new install or a move.
When to call a technician
If the gas supply and vents are fine and E003 comes back after a reset, the fault is likely inside the unit. Gas pressure testing, igniter and flame rod service, and gas valve replacement should be handled by a licensed installer, and doing it yourself can affect your warranty.
Common questions
How do I reset a Navien E003 error?
Press the power button to turn the unit off, wait about a minute, then turn it back on and open a hot water tap. If the gas supply or a vent blockage was the cause and has been fixed, the unit should light.
Can cold weather cause Navien E003?
Yes. Snow or ice on the vent terminals, a frozen condensate line or low propane pressure in very cold weather can all trigger ignition failures.
Is E003 the same as E012 on a Navien?
No. E003 means the burner never lit. E012 means it lit and then lost the flame during operation. Many causes overlap, especially gas supply and venting.
