Navien E012
Navien E012: flame loss, causes and fixes
Short answer
E012 means the Navien lit the burner but then lost the flame while running. Common causes include a drop in gas pressure when other appliances run, a blocked vent or condensate drain, wind at the vent terminal and a dirty flame rod.
Where E003 means the burner never lit, E012 means it lit and then went out. The unit shuts off the gas and shows the code.
E012 often shows up only at certain times, such as when the furnace runs or on windy days. Noting when it happens helps narrow down the cause.
What to check first
- Note whether E012 appears when other gas appliances are running. That points to gas supply.
- Check the intake and exhaust vent terminals outside for blockages and for anything that could cause strong wind or recirculation at the vent.
- Look at the condensate drain line and make sure it is not kinked, clogged or frozen.
- On propane, check the tank level.
- Turn the unit off with the power button, wait a minute, turn it back on and run hot water.
Common causes of Navien E012
Gas pressure drops under load
If the gas line is too small or the supply pressure is low, pressure can dip when the Navien fires at high output while other appliances run. The flame becomes unstable and goes out. A plumber can test pressure with everything running.
Venting and wind
A partly blocked vent, a vent terminal placed where wind blows straight into it, or exhaust being pulled back into the intake can all disturb the flame.
Condensate backup
If the condensate trap or drain is blocked, water can back up toward the combustion area and affect the flame.
Dirty flame rod
If the flame rod has buildup on it, the unit may lose its flame signal while the burner is running. Cleaning it is a service task inside the sealed combustion area.
Gas valve or control problems
Less often, a failing gas valve or control board causes the flame to drop out. These need diagnosis by a technician.
When to call a technician
If the gas supply, vents and condensate drain all look fine and E012 keeps returning, have a licensed installer check gas pressure, clean the flame rod and inspect the burner. Frequent E012 codes are worth fixing early, before they leave you without hot water.
Common questions
How do I clear Navien E012?
Turn the unit off with the power button, wait about a minute and turn it back on. If the code returns, the underlying cause needs to be found.
Why does my Navien show E012 only in winter?
Cold weather can freeze the condensate line, cover vents with snow or ice and lower propane pressure, all of which can cause flame loss.
