Navien E517
Navien E517: DIP switch setting fault
Short answer
Navien E517 is an abnormal DIP switch setting. The DIP switches on the control board tell the heater its model, gas type and other setup options. The code usually appears after installation, a control board replacement or a gas conversion when a switch is set wrong. Navien's manual says to contact technical support.
Navien water heaters use small DIP switches on the control board to configure the unit. E517 means the combination the board reads does not make sense for the heater.
The meaning and recommended action below come from Navien's User's Information Manual for NPE-2 condensing water heaters (NPE-180A2, NPE-210A2, NPE-240A2 and the S2 models). Navien technical support: 1-800-519-8794.
When it usually appears
- Right after installation
- After the control board was replaced
- After a gas conversion between natural gas and propane
What to do
If the code appeared after recent work, call the installer or technician who did it. Settings inside the unit should only be changed by a qualified professional with the power off, following Navien's installation manual. Wrong settings can affect combustion and safety.
How to reset it
Navien says you can try resetting the water heater by pressing the Back button on the front panel. If the code returns, the cause is still there and the unit needs service.
Before you call
Have the model number and serial number from the rating plate on the side of the unit ready, along with the date it was installed and the exact code. Navien asks for this information when you contact technical support, and your installer should be your first call for warranty service.

Common questions
Can I change the Navien DIP switches myself?
Navien says to contact technical support. The switches are inside the unit and control model and gas settings, so a qualified technician should set them.
