Navien E438
Navien E438: circulation pump fault
Short answer
E438 means abnormal operation of the circulation pump on Navien models with recirculation. Navien's manual gives two checks: outside the unit, make sure all water supply and return lines are open; inside the unit, a technician checks the direction of the 2-way valve. A failed pump or flow sensor may need replacing.
Many Navien heaters have a built-in pump that circulates hot water through a return line, so hot water reaches the taps faster. E438 means that pump is not working as expected.
The meaning below comes from Navien's manuals for its NPE tankless water heaters.
What to check first
- Make sure the cold supply, hot outlet and recirculation return valves at the heater are all fully open.
- If you have a dedicated return line, check any valves along it, including at the far fixture.
- If the code started after plumbing work, ask whether a valve was left closed.
What a technician checks
Navien's manual tells technicians to check the direction of the internal 2-way valve. Beyond that, they test the pump and the flow sensor. Air trapped in the loop can also stop circulation, so purging the lines is part of the job.
How to reset a Navien
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the unit off with the power button on the front panel, wait about a minute, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
If E438 returns, the pump or another component likely needs replacing. Hot water at the tap usually still works while recirculation is down.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, along with the exact code and when it appears: at startup, during use, or only at high demand. Mention any recent work on the gas, water or electrical supply and when the heater was last descaled. This helps the technician bring the right parts and often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Will my Navien make hot water with E438?
Usually yes at the tap, but recirculation stops until the problem is fixed.
