Rinnai 17
Rinnai code 17: venturi blockage
Short answer
Code 17 means the venturi on a Rinnai SENSEI or SENSEI RX/CX heater is blocked. Rinnai's steps are to confirm the condensate drain is draining, inspect the intake, exhaust and vent termination for obstructions, then remove and clean debris from the venturi assembly and run a reset procedure on the control board.
The venturi mixes gas and incoming air before they reach the burner. If dust, lint or other debris builds up there, the mixture goes wrong and the heater shows code 17.
The meaning and service steps below come from Rinnai's own diagnostic code guide for its tankless water heaters.
Rinnai lists this code for SENSEI and SENSEI RX/CX series.
What you can check
- The condensate drain. Make sure it flows freely and is not kinked or frozen.
- The vent terminal outside. Clear leaves, nests, snow or ice.
- The area around the heater. Lint from a dryer or dust from a workshop gets drawn into the air intake.
What a technician does
The technician removes the gas valve and venturi assembly from the fan, cleans out debris and reinstalls it. On SENSEI models, Rinnai then describes a short button sequence on the control board to clear the code and return the heater to normal operation.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the water heater off at the temperature controller, wait about a minute, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
If the same code keeps coming back, the cause is still there. Repeated resets are not a repair.
Preventing it
Keep the space around the heater clean, and avoid storing dusty items next to it. If the heater shares a room with a dryer, check that the dryer vent is sealed and not blowing lint into the room.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, along with the exact code and when it appears: at startup, during use, or only at high demand. Mention any recent work on the gas, water or electrical supply and when the heater was last descaled. This helps the technician bring the right parts and often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Can I clean the Rinnai venturi myself?
It sits behind the gas valve inside the sealed unit, so it is a job for a trained technician.
