Rheem 10
Rheem code 10: air supply or exhaust blockage
Short answer
Code 10 means the Rheem detected an air supply or exhaust blockage. On current models, Rheem says the unit was operated before the vent was installed or the blower motor is not creating enough ventilation, and it is a hard lockout that needs a reset procedure. Checks include the venting, condensation collar and the blower.
A tankless heater needs a clear path for combustion air in and exhaust out. Code 10 means that path is restricted or the blower cannot move enough air.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Operated before venting was installed, or the blower is not creating enough ventilation (hard lockout) |
| Earlier models | Air supply or exhaust blockage |
Rheem classifies this as a hard lockout code. The unit will not restart with a normal reset; a technician clears it with a reset procedure on the control board after fixing the cause.
If you smell gas, do not reset the unit or touch switches. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
What to check
- Vent terminals outside: leaves, nests, snow, ice
- Vent pipe connections and approved vent materials
- The condensation collar, installed correctly
- Heat exchanger fins, fan and air intake, not blocked by lint or dust
- The blower motor and housing, cleaned by a technician if dirty
What you can do
Clear anything blocking the vent terminals, then call a technician for the lockout reset. Keep the area around the heater free of lint, especially near dryers.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Why won't my Rheem reset after code 10?
Code 10 is a hard lockout on current models. A technician must clear it with the control board reset procedure after fixing the cause.
