Rheem 34
Rheem code 34: air temperature sensor fault
Short answer
Code 34 is a temperature sensor fault on Rheem tankless heaters. Current models call it an ambient thermistor malfunction; earlier models call it a combustion air temperature sensor fault. Technicians check the wiring and the sensor's resistance, and on earlier models also the fan blade and airflow around the unit and vent terminal.
In this guide
This sensor measures air temperature, which helps the heater manage freeze protection and combustion. Code 34 means its reading is out of range.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Ambient thermistor malfunction |
| Earlier models | Combustion air temperature sensor fault |
What a technician checks
- Sensor resistance at the control board connector, using the values for your model
- Wiring from the sensor to the board
- On earlier models: the fan blade tight on the motor shaft and in good condition
- Restrictions in airflow around the unit and vent terminal
What you can do
Clear the area around the heater and the vent terminal, then reset once. If code 34 returns, schedule service. The sensor is inexpensive; the labor is the main cost.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Is Rheem code 34 serious?
It stops the heater until fixed, but it is usually a simple sensor or wiring repair.
