Rheem 90
Rheem code 90: vent blockage before ignition
Short answer
Code 90 on current Rheem and Ruud tankless heaters means the unit was operated before the vent was installed, or it detected a blockage in the venting during its pre-purge cycle, before ignition. Rheem says the unit must be reset with the reset procedure, and the venting checked: approved materials, terminations, lengths, spacing and seals.
In this guide
Before lighting, the heater runs its fan to clear the combustion chamber. If it senses a blocked vent during that pre-purge, it stops with code 90.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Vent blockage detected during pre-purge, before ignition, or operated before the vent was installed |
Rheem notes that code 90 occurs before the unit goes to ignition, while the related code 99 occurs after the unit shuts down.
Venting checks Rheem lists
- Approved vent materials
- Approved terminations
- Approved vent lengths
- Location and distance between vent terminals, so exhaust is not drawn back in
- Blocked venting
- Venting not sealed properly
What you can do
Clear snow, ice, leaves or nests from the vent terminals. Then have a technician perform the reset procedure. See our tankless water heater venting requirements guide.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.
See every code on our Rheem error codes page.
Common questions
Can snow cause Rheem code 90?
Yes. Snow or ice blocking the vent terminal is a common winter cause. Clear it, then reset.
