Rheem 52
Rheem code 52: modulating gas valve fault
Short answer
Code 52 is a modulating gas valve fault. Current Rheem manuals call it a PGFR malfunction; the proportional gas flow regulator is the only modulating valve in the gas control valve, adjusting flame size. Earlier models call it a modulating solenoid valve fault. Technicians reseat and check the connectors and wiring, test the valve and replace it if needed.
In this guide
The modulating valve constantly adjusts gas flow to match hot water demand. Code 52 means the control board is not getting the expected response from it.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | PGFR (proportional gas flow regulator) malfunction |
| Earlier models | Modulating solenoid valve fault |
If you smell gas, do not reset the unit or touch switches. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
What a technician checks
- The control board connector and the small connectors on the PGFR, removed and reinserted
- The wiring harness for loose or damaged terminals
- The valve's resistance
If the valve tests bad, the gas control valve or its PGFR is replaced.
What you can do
Reset once. If code 52 returns, call a technician. Gas valve work should never be attempted by a homeowner.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Is Rheem code 52 the same as Rinnai code 52?
Both relate to the modulating gas valve, though parts and steps differ by brand.
