Rheem 16
Rheem code 16: over temperature warning
Short answer
Code 16 means the outlet water temperature is above the set point on the remote control. On current Rheem and Ruud models, Rheem says to check the outlet thermistor first, then the water bypass valve. Earlier models call it an over temperature warning and list a clogged heat exchanger, restricted airflow and debris in the combustion chamber.
In this guide
Code 16 tells you the water leaving the heater is hotter than you asked for. The heater may be reading the temperature wrong, or it may truly be running hot.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Outlet water temperature above the set point; check the outlet thermistor first, then the water bypass valve |
| Earlier models | Over temperature warning |
What a technician checks
- The outlet thermistor, which Rheem lists first; code 33 is its dedicated fault code
- The water bypass valve, which has its own code, 66
- On earlier models: a clogged heat exchanger, airflow around the unit and vent terminal, and debris in the combustion chamber or exhaust
What you can do
Be careful with hot water at the taps until it is fixed, especially with children or older adults in the home. Clean the inlet filter, flush the unit if it is due, and call a technician if code 16 keeps appearing.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Is Rheem code 16 a scald risk?
It means water is hotter than the setting, so take care at the taps until it is fixed.
