Rheem 71
Rheem code 71: gas inlet solenoid valve fault
Short answer
Code 71 is a gas inlet solenoid valve fault on Rheem and Ruud tankless heaters. Current models call it a gas control valve malfunction (inlet solenoid); earlier models call it a gas inlet solenoid valve control fault. Technicians reseat the connector, check the wiring, measure the solenoid resistance and replace the gas valve or control board.
In this guide
The inlet solenoid opens and closes the main gas supply to the burner. Code 71 means the control board detected a problem with it.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Gas control valve malfunction (inlet solenoid) |
| Earlier models | Gas inlet solenoid valve control fault |
If you smell gas, do not reset the unit or touch switches. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
What a technician checks
- The gas valve connector, removed and reinserted; Rheem notes a loose connection is a common cause
- The wiring harness for loose or damaged terminals
- Solenoid resistance
Depending on the results, the gas control valve or the control board is replaced.
What you can do
Reset once. If code 71 returns, call a qualified technician.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Is Rheem code 71 a gas leak?
No. It is an electrical fault in the valve circuit. If you smell gas, leave and call the utility.
