Rheem 65
Rheem code 65: water volume control valve
Short answer
Code 65 on current Rheem and Ruud tankless heaters is a water volume control valve malfunction. The valve limits flow when demand exceeds what the unit can heat. Rheem notes it only activates when demand is higher than the unit's limits, so technicians open all hot water fixtures to test it, then check wiring and replace the valve if it fails.
In this guide
When you run more hot water than the burner can handle, the water volume control valve restricts flow slightly so the water still comes out hot. Code 65 means that valve is not responding correctly.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Water volume control valve malfunction |
What a technician checks
- Opens all hot water fixtures so demand exceeds the unit's capacity, which activates the valve.
- Measures voltage to the valve, which only appears when it activates.
- Checks the connector and wiring.
- Replaces the valve if it does not respond.
What you might notice
- Lukewarm water when several fixtures run
- The heater shutting down during high demand
Rheem also lists the water volume control valve among the checks for code 29.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Can scale cause Rheem code 65?
Scale and debris can affect moving parts in the water path. Regular flushing and a clean inlet filter help.
