Rheem 72
Rheem code 72: flame rod fault
Short answer
Code 72 is a flame sensing fault on Rheem tankless heaters. On current models, the flame rods detect flame before the igniter activates. Earlier models call it a flame sensing device fault and list checking that the rod touches the flame, removing debris, checking wiring and voltage, cleaning carbon off the rod and replacing it.
In this guide
Flame rods prove the burner is lit. If they sense flame when there should be none, or give a bad signal, the heater shuts down for safety.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Flame rods detecting flame before the igniter is activated |
| Earlier models | Flame sensing device fault |
If you smell gas, do not reset the unit or touch switches. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
What a technician checks
- Connectors to the flame rods and gas valve, reseated
- Indoor models have two flame rods; outdoor models have one
- Carbon buildup on the rod, cleaned or the rod replaced
- Foreign material in the burner chamber
- Wiring and flame rod voltage
- The gas control valve, if flame persists when it should be off
What you can do
Reset once. If code 72 returns, call a technician. The flame rods sit in the sealed combustion area. See our tankless water heater flame sensor replacement guide for typical prices.
How to reset it
- Close all hot water taps.
- Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Can a dirty flame rod cause Rheem code 72?
Earlier Rheem guidance lists cleaning carbon buildup off the rod. On current models the code specifically means flame was sensed too early.
