Rheem 21

Rheem code 21: air intake filter switch

Short answer

Code 21 appears on earlier Rheem tankless models and means a malfunction of the air intake filter switch. Rheem's remedy is simple: make sure the air filter door is properly seated and the front panel is properly installed. It often shows up right after someone cleans the filter.

Some earlier Rheem tankless heaters have a switch that confirms the air intake filter door is closed. Code 21 means the switch is not reading closed.

This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.

What it means by model generation

Rheem generationMeaning
Earlier modelsMalfunction of the air intake filter switch

What to do

  1. Turn the heater off.
  2. Check that the air filter door is fully seated and latched.
  3. Make sure the front panel is installed correctly and all screws are in place.
  4. Turn the heater back on and run hot water.

If it keeps coming back

A bent door, a damaged switch or loose wiring can keep the switch from closing. A technician can test the switch and replace it if needed.

Keep the filter clean

A clogged air filter can cause combustion codes such as 05 and 10, so clean it on schedule and reseat the door carefully every time.

Before you call

Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions

Why did Rheem code 21 appear after I cleaned the filter?

The filter door or front panel is probably not fully seated. Reseat it and try again.
