Rheem 99

Rheem code 99: blocked flue or vent

Short answer

Code 99 means a venting blockage. On current Rheem and Ruud models, the unit detected a blockage during its post-purge cycle after shutting down, or was run before the vent was installed, and it is a hard lockout that needs the reset procedure. Earlier models call it a blocked flue fault and list cleaning the heat exchanger, combustion fan, inlet filter and exhaust flue.

After the burner shuts off, the fan keeps running briefly to clear exhaust. If the heater senses a blockage during that post-purge, it locks out with code 99.

This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.

What it means by model generation

Rheem generationMeaning
Current modelsVent blockage detected during post-purge, after shutdown (hard lockout)
Earlier modelsBlocked flue fault

Rheem classifies this as a hard lockout code. The unit will not restart with a normal reset; a technician clears it with a reset procedure on the control board after fixing the cause.

What to check

  • Vent terminals: snow, ice, leaves, nests
  • Approved vent materials, terminations and lengths
  • Spacing between terminals, so exhaust is not drawn back in
  • Vent seals
  • On earlier models: blockage in the heat exchanger, combustion fan, inlet filter and exhaust flue

What you can do

Clear the vent terminals, then call a technician to perform the lockout reset and inspect the venting. See our tankless water heater venting requirements guide.

Before you call

Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions

What is the difference between Rheem code 90 and 99?

On current models, 90 is detected before ignition and 99 after shutdown. Both point to venting.
