Rheem code 33: outlet water sensor fault

Short answer

Code 33 is an outlet thermistor fault on Rheem and Ruud tankless heaters: the sensor that measures the temperature of water leaving the unit. Current models call it an outlet thermistor malfunction, with a resistance range of about 7,000 to 23,000 ohms. Earlier models list checking the wiring, testing the sensor, cleaning scale off it and replacing it.

The outlet thermistor tells the heater how hot the water leaving it is, so it can hold your set temperature. Code 33 means that reading is invalid.

This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.

What a technician checks

  • Resistance at the control board connector, about 7,000 to 23,000 ohms per Rheem's manual
  • The wiring from the sensor to the board
  • Scale on the sensor, which earlier models' remedy says to clean off

A sensor that is out of range after cleaning is replaced.

Why it matters

Without a good outlet reading, water temperature can swing or the heater shuts down. Rheem lists the outlet thermistor first when diagnosing code 16 as well.

How to reset it

  1. Close all hot water taps.
  2. Turn the remote control off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  3. Open a hot tap and watch whether the code returns.

Before you call

Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions

Can hard water cause Rheem code 33?

Scale on the sensor can affect it. Earlier Rheem guidance includes cleaning scale off the sensor.
