Rheem 51
Rheem code 51: gas valve fault
Short answer
On current Rheem and Ruud tankless heaters, code 51 is a gas control valve malfunction: the unit detected flame after the demand for hot water ended and it turned off. On earlier models, code 51 is a gas inlet solenoid valve fault. Either way, the gas valve, its wiring and the flame rods are checked, and the gas valve may be replaced.
In this guide
Code 51 involves the gas control valve, but what exactly it reports depends on the age of the heater.
This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.
What it means by model generation
| Rheem generation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current models | Gas control valve malfunction: flame detected after hot water demand ended and the unit turned off |
| Earlier models | Gas inlet solenoid valve fault |
If you smell gas, do not reset the unit or touch switches. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
What a technician checks
- Flame rod connections and the gas valve connectors, reseated first
- Whether flame is visible after the unit turns off, viewed through the sight glass
- Debris in the burner chamber
- Solenoid valve resistance, on earlier models
If flame persists after shutdown, the gas control valve is replaced. That is a safety repair.
What you can do
Turn the heater off and call a qualified technician. Do not keep resetting a gas valve code.
Before you call
Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions
Is Rheem code 51 dangerous?
On current models it means flame was detected after shutdown, which is a gas valve safety issue. Turn the unit off and call a technician.
