Rheem 80

Rheem code 80 or 81: gas cut-off failure

Short answer

Code 80 means a gas cut-off failure. On current Rheem models, the unit detected flame after hot water demand ended and the unit turned off; Rheem's checks include the flame rods, debris in the burner chamber and, if flame is visible after shutdown, replacing the gas control valve. Earlier models show 80 or 81 and list testing all solenoid valves and flame rod voltage.

When hot water demand stops, gas to the burner should shut off within seconds. Code 80, or 81 on some earlier units, means the heater detected flame after it should have gone out.

This page uses two Rheem sources: the current Rheem and Ruud tankless troubleshooting manual, and Rheem's error code list for earlier tankless models. Codes can differ between generations, so the meaning for each is shown where they differ. Rheem technical support: (800) 432-8373.

What it means by model generation

Current modelsGas control valve malfunction: flame detected after demand ended and the unit turned off
Earlier modelsGas cut-off failure (codes 80 and 81)

If you smell gas, do not reset the unit or touch switches. Leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.

What a technician checks

  1. Reseats the flame rod and gas valve connectors.
  2. Cycles the unit on and off while watching the burner through the sight glass for flame after shutdown.
  3. Looks for foreign debris in the burner chamber and cleans the burner.
  4. If flame stays visible more than about 5 seconds after the unit turns off, replaces the gas control valve.

What you can do

Turn the heater off at the remote and call a technician. This is a gas safety code; do not keep resetting it.

Before you call

Have the model and serial number from the rating label ready, and note whether your unit is a condensing (high-efficiency) or non-condensing model. Tell the technician the exact code, when it appears and any recent work on the gas, water, venting or electrical supply. That often saves a second visit.

Common questions

Is Rheem code 80 dangerous?

It means gas may not be shutting off properly. Turn the heater off and have it checked promptly.
